Cutting Board Maintenance

Cutting board maintenance requires careful washing and replenishing the cutting board with chronic coats of oils and waxes. Follow this simple guide to learn how to care for wood cutting boards.

Washing:

When washing your cutting board you need to use lukewarm water and mild soap. DO NOT USE harsh chemical cleaners such as bleach. This will damage your cutting board beyond repair. Simply wipe down the soiled surface on your cutting board with a washcloth and mild soap mixture. Rinse off with lukewarm water. Then promptly dry with a towel. DO NOT let your cutting board soak in the sink this will cause MAJOR DAMAGE AND WARPING.

Maintenance:

If your cutting board looks faded on the cutting surface when dry, this is due to dry wood. I like to use this time to buff out any unsightly scratches on the cutting surface. First, use a copper scour sponge and scrub the surface in overlapping circular motions, this buffs out small scratches. For deeper cuts, you may need to start with 180 or 220 grit sandpaper. Wipe cutting surface clean with damp cloth and let the surface dry. Then soak with your favorite food safe oil.

Oiling:

When choosing oil for your cutting board, read the bottle thoroughly to make sure it is FOOD SAFE OIL. You may choose to use an Oil/Wax mixture. Cramer Craft uses “Howard Butcher Block Conditioner” on all food safe products. This conditioner is a mix of mineral oils and beeswax, which is all natural and 100% food safe. DO NOT think “all natural” and “food safe” are the same thing. For any wood product that IS NOT food safe, you may use “Howard Feed-N-Wax” to rejuvenate the wood.
